Cooling system tips

WITH FALL upon us, now is the time to prepare you car's cooling
system for the freezing temperatures ahead.

The foliowing tips will help provide a good start to (trouble-free
winter driving.

© Check antifreeze/ceolant level: in cooling systems with an-
tifreeze/coolant recovery reservoirs, the radiators should be full of
antifreeze.

Cars without recovery reservoirs should have an antifreeze fevel
about one inch below the filler neck when the engine is cold.

® Flush out harmful corrosion: even if your coolant is providing
ample antifreeze and anti-boil protection, its rust inhibitor package
may have lost its effectiveness.

As a rule, the entire cooling system should be flushed and refilled
with fresh antifreeze each year to maintain optimum efficiency.

Preventive maintenance is the key to prolonging the life of your car.
By following these simple tips, motorists can help ensure cooling
sysiem longevity and performance.

really, says cooling system experts,

Overheating, a problem general-
ly associated with hot weather
driving, can happen in any season
if the engine’s cooling system
needs service.

Other causes of overheating in-
clude incorrect ignition timing,
slipping fan belt or other malfunc-
tions in the fan mechanism, faulty
thermostat, a collapsed hose or a
worn pressure cap.

If the engine is running hot,
however, even a heavy duty cleaner
may not remove the accumulation
of scale and rust in the radiator
and engine block.
