AS VALENTINE’S Day ap- proaches on Feb. 14, thoughts of love are on more and more minds. But love is no simple matter to understand. There are two kinds of love, ac- cording to Richard Wessler, chairman of the Psychology Department at Pace University .in Pleasantville, N.Y. . One type is called mature love. This is when two pcople share sim- - ilar. goals, responsibilities and in- terests, such as reading, travelling and raising children. A variation of mature love is a person's affinity for popular fig- ures, such as a movie star or rock musician, and sports teams like the Edmonton Oilers. The second kind of love, often assoicated with Valentine’s Day, Wessler continued, is the romantic type. Romantic love is a feeling be- tween two people fueled by passion and sexual attraction. The: big problem; “with romantic love is that it fizzles out quickly. . . So to. help -keep . these special mo simple to understand feelings alive, people give cach other gifts of romantic products. The products bought by the romantic consumer range from sexy lingerie to heartspeckied underwear. There are some very serious reasons for giving silly gifts like these, according to Wessler, One reason a person may give a roman- tic gift is to sustain the romantic fove that could be disappearing be- {ween a newly paired couple. : Another reason is to revive the romantic love that might be wan- ing between a couple in a long- standing relationship. “A partnership may also give a romantic gift'to communicate his or her: feelings and send an unmis- takable symbol of passion,”’ said Wessler. He explained that people find written and verbal expression dif- ficult so they head to upscale stores to buy professionally designed products. These products, which include everything from heart-covered socks and neckties to jewelery, large. ‘assortment._ Of: fine Belgium: "chocolates for your” Special Valentine ... & ee 2 Canes The Ultimate Chocolate Shop YES WE ARE OPEN | VALENTINE'’S DAY _ SUNDAY FEB. 14th 1804 Lonsdale 987-9351 crystal and china, look attractive, are usually higher in quality than what an individual can create by him or herself, and take less time to make. The psychology professor went on to explain that many years ago. his grandfather would have written a letter or love poem to reveal his innermost thoughts to a special person. Today, however, writing an ex- piessive note or poem is viewed as odd and takes up too much of per- son’s time. One way romantic lovers imply the thought of Jove, without hav- ing to say or write it and make any commitment, is by using the heart as a symbol. The symbol allows people in the stage of romantic love to express what's on their minds without making any long-term promises, Wessler said. 27 - Wednesday, February 10, 1988 - North Shore News ICE CREAM CAKES & SILK ROSES This Valentine's Day, give the unexpected — an Ice-cream Valen- tine, decorated with rosebuds and your personal message.
