20 - Feiday, November 14, !986 - North Shore News HOUSEHOLD ERRORS Prevent eye accidents THOUSANDS of people suffer eye injuries in home accidents every year, says the Canadian Optometric Association. Many household cleaning chores, workshop tasks and yard work expose the eyes to caustic chemicals and e'} types of flying particles. Culprits include household cleaning agents, power tools, fertilizers, weed killers and power yard equipment. Some people are unaware of the many eye hazards around the home, the association says, Without a thought, they expose their eyes to sawdust, flying chips of wood, stone, nails or bolts, ceiling tile staples, protruding wire, chemicals, both dry and liq- . uid, branches of trees and shrubs, and even welding spatter. Others take an “it can't happen to me” attitude. ees has fallen in love HOME IS where the heart is — and hearts are among Canada’s most favored decorating motifs. With nostalgia in, and everybody looking back to the past for design inspiration, heart shapes are turning up as baskets, trays and pillows. Delicate heart motifs are being seattered over linen, in red, pink or white on white. For walls, there are heart pla- ques and grapevine wreaths, and towel hooks in rustic wrought iron with heart-shaped finials. Rt Sull others think their regular prescription glasses or contact lenses will protect them, That's not so, op- tometrists say, Eyeglasses prescribed today are, by federal regula- tion, impact resistant but they are not safety glasses. Contact lenses are made for seeing, nol protection. The solution to home eye accidents is simple, inex- pensive and as close as the nearest hardware, depart- ment or hobby store. That is where consumers can find plastic safety goggles, including types that fit over ylasses, face shields and sometimes even welding goggles and shields. Persons who wear prescription glasses can vither buy safety goggles to wear over them or ask their op- tometrist for industrial-strength safety lenses. Nhat Ef And, hearts are the focus of sophisticated graphics in a rainbow of colors. Truly, for the '80s, if decorating is your passion, you've got to have heart.
