The Easter Parade

Centuries ago, it was cus-
tomary to walk through the
fields and open spaces after
mass, en masse, carrying a
crucifix or candle. After the
Reformation this medieval
Easter walk,lost its original
religious character and
gradually developed into the
Easter Parade.

Until recently the Easter
fashion parade down New
York’s Sth Avenue was a
sight to behold, with
everyone trying to outdo the
other as they strolled non-
chalantly down the _ street.
Celebrities staging incredible
and often vulgar publicity
stunts caused the tradition
to falter and finally
disintegrate into nothing
more han a parade of regu-
lar traffic.
