A8 - Sunday, August 12, 1984 - North Shore News’ ‘Human rights activists’ SEE WHERE THE DEVIL himself has been in town. Or so one would judge from a front-page story in the Vancouver Sun. In this case, old horny- head appeared in the guise of Col. Jack Mohr, who was here to speak to the Canadian League of Rights. | had never heard of him, but he is not loved by the Left. Renate Shearer, the Solidarity socialist, doesn’t like him. Nor do Mark Silverberg, who is the executive director of the Canadian Jewish Con- gress, Rev. Barry Morris of the First United Church, various Anglicans, Charles Boylan of the People’s Front Against Fascist and Racist Violence, and others who pray to their gods that free speech will soon come to an end. Except for them. If the ‘‘news’’ report by Nancy Knickerbocker is to be believed (had it been slanted any more it would have fallen off the page) Colonel Mohr is many things, none of them good. He is anti-Semitic, racisi, anti-liberal, and Lord knows what else. And if what | read is right, the colonel is a clever devil. For as Silverberg stated to the avid Knickerbocker: ‘“*Col. Mohr is a specialist in twisting anti-Semitism into a patriotic duty. He did it well, and he did it with the blessing of the Canadian League of Rights.’”’ My gosh! But what did the colonel say? Did he complain about the grip that [Israel and the Zionists have on the Mid- dle East policies of the United States? Or was it that this man, said to be the most decorated American to emerge from the Korean War (but not by Knickebocker), is criminally infatuated with the Doug Collins TS white race? However that may be, he is a specialist in ‘‘psycho- politics,’’ a mystery to me having something to do with exposing minority propagan- da. Well, for all | care he could be telling people that Belgium started the First World War. To each his own. What happened to Col. Mohr was a perfect example of a media and left-wing gang-up. No wonder the League didn’t allow reporters into this private meeting. 1t is often difficult to distinguish them from the _ protesters. Mr. Silverberg got in, however, which was pretty generous of someone, seeing that the Canadian Jewish Congress would hardly have permitted the League’s ex- ecutive director to attend one of ifs meetings. Obviously, the foo-fa-ra at the Sandman Hotel was or- chestrated. Fair enough — if it is also accepted that an in- timidating right-wing demonstration at a left-wing meeting would also be accep- table. But we all know it wouldn’t be. The Lord’s men and the media would howl ‘‘fascists!”’ If they could, al! of the named protesters would ban the Col. Mohrs of the world. They would also ban Colonel Collins, you, and anyone else they didn’t like. We have it from Silverberg and Shearer — transmitted by the faithful Knickerbocker — that ‘Canadian laws pertaining to ‘hate literature’ are inade- quate and must be changed.’’ (James Keegstra is to be tried for his opinions, but that isn’t enough.) These totalitarian forces have close links with authoni- ty. In Cranbrook, on July 24th, the RCMP descended the final joke! on Col. Mohr’s quarters and confiscated $5,000 worth of books and tapes. Some technical thing about Customs. But you don’t need a degree in political science to guess why the cops moved. I also hear that the B.C. At- torney General’s office is ‘looking into”’ the situation. But not to protect the League’s right to propagate itS views. Let it also be noted that the above-mentioned Boylan is a big noise in the Communist party of Canada (Marxist Leninist), the party that believes that God lives in Albania. He and the Church Militant link hands. Not one of them would dream of ban- ning Boylan, of course. He’s O.K. The final joke is that the demonstrators call them- selves ‘‘human rights activists.’’ E§ mailbox [><| ‘Living’ is different from ‘existing’ Dear Editor: Few decisions that a government makes so clearly demonstrate its approach to human life as the recent deci- sion of the Ministry of Human Resources to eliminate the funding to three small programs in Van- couver’s Downtown Eastside. These latest victims of Grace McCarthy’s guillotine of restraint: The Eastside Family Place, The Downtown Eastside Women’s Center, and the handicapped program at First United Church, all have one unique thing in common. To the people they served they made the difference bet- ween something that can be called ‘‘living’’ and existing” Living is to have something to look forward to in the course of a week, however small, as a break from the dreary monotony of going through each day the same as the last day. When you are disabled and poor, to be able to laugh, to be creative, to be with other people and to en- joy life for a few hours a week is not a lot to ask for — but it is a lot to have taken away. If you are poor, restraint means the difference between existing and living. A deci- sion, in the name of restraint, to save a few hundred dollars a year and co rob anybody of the opportunity to live doesn’t say much about the size of this Government’s heart — or mind.
