‘unveiled a couple_of months’ ago, and full production ~
of the $14,500 luxury car is slated ta: begin next year’
sometime, providing -negotiations: with Puerto Rico
_and the Bahamas for a factory site, go smoothly,

Based on a Chevrolet. Malibu Station Wagon, The
Silver Volt has new aerodynamic bodywork, and’a few
unusual features for an electric car::. least of. all being; -
air conditioning, and power assisted brakes, windows,”
steering and door locks. Thesé power options, far from
being a drain on.the fast charge lead-cobalt. batteries, -
are driven by a small-2' cylinder gasoline engine, which
also serves as. an energy recharging unit...a “get you
home” feature, if you will. It also supplies heat for the
heater.

The batteries can apparently. be. recharged to.an
80% charge in as little time as 45 minutes, or can be.
slow charged overnight. On.a full charge, the car has

Replacement cost of the battery pack at present, is put
at $1800 (US).

And so.the electric. vehicle takes another ‘tentative,
step into the -marketplace.: .GM is on record as saying it
will be selling electrics in the 1980s, Sears Roebuck is
| said to be readying a modified Fiat 128: ‘powered by 20 ~
-experimental - ‘DieHard. batteries, GE unveiled a 4
- passenger “state of the art” prototype last fall, that

could sell for $6000, and the American government is
funding further research in: electrics, to the tune of $160.
- million between. now and 1986. :

“A lot of action, but still an electric’ car.is ‘unlikely to
replace yourcar,tomorrow.The US is hopeful they'll be
perfected by the time the oil runs;out, but a massive
breakthrough in battery technology is needed before
electric cars can possibly become a viable altenative to
gasoline powered cars. That's part of the reason there’s
as much research being done on cheaper and cleaner
burning alternate fuels to power your existing car.
Methane, hydrogen and alcohol may hold as much

romise for the automotive future. I for one, am really
[oo king forward to secing how the next decade un-
folds. ..it should be an exciting time for car lovers!
