New provincial coastal parks
will protect wilderness areas

NINE NEW parks have
been created along British
Columbia’s scenic coastline
as part of the government’s
Protected Areas Strategy.

The announcement was made
recently by Parks Minister John
Cashore and Tourism Minister
Darlene Marzari, who spoke on
Cashore’s behalf at the 1992
World Congress on Adventure
Travel. and Eco-tourism in
Whistler.

“These parks add to the wide
range of activities people can en-
joy in B.C."s_ parks,’’ said
Cashore. ‘Visitors can dive with
six-gill sharks, tour an = ar-
chipelago with more than 300
small islands, or view killer whales

and other marine life.’’

The new parks are located along
the Inside Passage, a coastal
waterway with many _ islands,
sheltered inlets, and a_ rich
aboriginal heritage. They cover
more than 18,000 hectares, mostly
foreshore water.

BC Parks will protect the
wilderness quality of these areas
by limiting development.

The parks are among. the first
of the 23 areas scheduled to be
designated this year as a result of
extensive planning and public in-
volvement.

recommendations for protected
areas.””

The park designations will not
prejudice land claims negotiations.

“These new parks help create
an outstanding chain of parks
stretching along the coast from
Washington through B.C. to
Alaska,’’ said Marzari.

More than 160 study areas will
be considered for possible desig-
nation over the next eight years
under the Protected Area Strate-
gy, which is being developed‘ to
double B.C. parks and wilderness
areas on a representative basis by
the year 2000.
