wy WE TOOK another walk last Sunday but no way would this one qualify for our nine-miles-a-week target. THE VINTAGE YEARS This was a walk of a dif- ferent feather. More of a gawk. Our museum, you see, was offering its contributions to the city’s current FolkFest, by repeating the heritage walk that centres on the harbor _ area, site of the city’s birth 80-odd years ago. John Stuart, curator at our museum, combined forces with Gary Penway from city hall (he’s in the development ser- vices section). John showed us the past, while Gary teased us with visions of what the future : might bring. * What can we do with what we have left to show of our historical origins? » How.can we handle it so that it continues both to deco- ‘rate the present and serve it too? I personally reject the theme concept, setting it all up like a frontier town or an alpine village — we might make some movie money but - we still have to live in it. ‘According to John, we have a singular abundance of origi- : nal buildings, most of them on their original sites. This is rare, "as is the fact that so many of . them are in current lively use. |’ Some of them have had little respect, ‘true, but there are some reai treasures. ‘Take ‘the sturdy littie B. C Telephone office on West First Street, where we used to take our handful of monthly chits to argue over the bill. . : And the domed Barraclough Building on the corner of Se- cond Street and Lonsdale Avenue whose appearance has , been lovingly tended all. these CORRECTION NOTICE > In our B5-4 Summer Sale tlyer, Bedding Co-ordinates in Three Patterns on page -16 véll_ be late — rainchecks will be available at the store. “Sorly for any inconvenience this. may * have caused. : ree . The bank building at the south east corner of First and Lonsdale declares without equivocation its serious pur- pose, like any other secure dowager. On the other hand, the Coronation Block an West Esplanade owes its distinction to its wild free-form architec- ture. Jts second level seems to have no relationship what- soever to its main floor, except to sit on top of it. A whim, It was built by the North Vancouver Land and Im- provement Co. which original- ly owned more than half of what we now define as the Ci- ty of North Vancouver. It could, one presumes, afford whim. As we zig-zagged down to the waterfront, about 15 of us, 4 Special zig invited us to visit Sue Chalmers’ Victorian gucst-house on East Second Street. We left our shoes on the porch and tip-toed through the well-preserved rooms now for rent 10 tourists. Each bedroom has an enormous bathtub ensuite, all suitably furnished and papered and curtained to keep the orig- inal ambience. Even the garden is stocked with lovely old-fashioned flowering plants. Sue had to give up the se- cond B in ‘B&B’? — she’s a working woman — but her place shows good advice coupled with lots of elbow grease, All Lower Lonsdale's major players, and others who want to be involved, are currently meeting tc solve the area's problems. The acres and acres of Versatile Shipyard present one of the major targets for development, but action doesn’t begin and end with the area’s owners. The Port of Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver, the businesses on both sides of Lonsdale, the union workers whose life it was — they all have to have a say. Not to mention us: you and me. It's our town. How much do we care? What's important to us? Would revenue from towering apartments and/or luxury homes on that water- front make up for continued loss of accessibility? Then there’s transport to e ° adjust, and bridges and barges and trains to sort out. It’s everybody’s business, and you and I aren’t high on the priority fist, but we can think and imagine and suggest and we have both memories and dreams, What would you like to see happen? 3' Tall Silk Plants NOW ONLY sq 6” reg. 23. 99. | 4 Tall Silk Plants ; | NOW ONLY 4 9°? 3 59.99 6’ Fiscus Tree H NOW ONLY 562? 99.99 SALE ENDS JULY 17/93 [STORE CLOSED JULY 2-6} | MINI JUNGLE FLORIST 1449 Lonsdale Ave. North Van. © 987-3888 “Ment of clowns, jugglers, magicians and comedians.
