The Twins had the largest

Empey said most of the
attention was focused on sev-
enteen-year-old Twins pitcher
and utility-infielder Dustin
Schroer.

Schroer, a _ right-hander
who measures a solid six-foot-
six and 200 pounds, has been
hitting at a torrid clip for the
Twins this season. He’s post-
eda 415 average at the plate
to date and leads the team in
extra base hits.

“He's a great hitter and he
has a lot of speed,” said
Empey. “They're interested in
him because he’s got natural
power and natural speed on
the basepaths.”

“They're looking at him as
a hitter more than anything
else, though. He's been hit-
ting the ball real well for us.”

Major League scouts court North She

also took some batting prac-
tice with Kansas City Royals

The scouts were tight-
lipped about Schroer and
whether they liked what they
saw, though.

“H's kind of like a game,”
said Schroer. “They won't talk
that much if there are other
scouts there. They don’t want
to say too much.”

Schroer logged innings ast
season with the North Delta
Blue Jays, but made the move
to the Twins when he decides
the Jays were pegging him as
solely a pitcher.

“I just wasn’t happy
there,” he said. “I prefer to
hit and play the outfield.”

Buc that doesn’t mean he’s
ruling out the mound by any
means.

“I’ve been. known to
throw some good stuff,” he
joked.

He’s hoping to be selected
this June when Major League
Baseball holds its annual draft.

His former North Delta
teammate, Justin Morno, was
drafted by the Minnesota
Twins franchise in the third
round of the draft last vear.

Schroer said he hasn't
made up his mind if he'll go
south for school or opt for
another season with the
Twins.

“Dl just wait and see what
happens in the draft,” he said.
“If Pm drafted then I'll have
to think about it.”

And while the scouts gave
no indication of his chances,
he said he’s already been talk-
ing to a number of them on
the phone. .

trek to the showcase were
hurlers Mark Roberts: and
Adam Daniels, backstop Sean
Horzak, infielders Dom
Laurin and Jeff St. Pierre and
outfielder-pitcher Tom
Huntingtord.

On Sunday the Twins split.
a doubleheader. with ‘the ~
Nanaimo Pirates at Parkgate,
dropping the first tilt 11-7
bur winning the second 13-7.
