STEWART: Although you
neglected to point out what
letter you are referring to, or

took a lot of energy and time
and concentration.

Some people called me a
work-aholic. I never thought
of myself as going so far in
my work habits that I could
be called a work-aholic, but,
I suppose it ts significant that
others thought of me as
being so.

Then, a little over a year
ago came the [liness I!
mentioned, which required
me to be entirely away from
my work for a couple of
months and then to make a
very slow stab at gradually
increasing my output.
During the slow getting well
process, I have felt pretty
good, but was under doctor's
orders to take my time at

What happened to me this
time? Well, obviously what
happened to me was that I
wrote something you dis-
agreed with, which seems to
make it clear to you that I
was “wrong.”

What I wrote seemed
“right” for me at the time,
but that does not mean it was
“right” for you or for anyone
else who read it. An old

work and lately have held up
my end rather well, but I
have not got into the in-
tensive style I once revelled
in. I used to think of myself
as an efficient achiever, but
now, although my bosses
seem to consider me an
efficient and valuable
worker, I can't help but see
myself as being almost a
drifter. Fm not really a
drifter, but I am so much
more relaxed and laid-back
that I can't get used to it. All
through my {illness I have
had the goal of getting back
into the driving ways I used
to feel good about. Now, I'm

As an “achiever” I was
Pleased by my successes and

by my freedom from frantic
efforts to be the best and
achieve the most, I feel too

many twinges of guiltiness
about. being so laid-back. I
think I am im a position
where Ill have to choose
whether I want the old way
again, or the new way that I
was forced into. What would
you advise?

STEWART: As so often
happens, you may be
avoiding considering
alternatives other than the
two you mention. Think of
this last year as a learning
experience.

What have you learned?
Perhaps your illness is telling
you that the old way was not
good enough for you.
Perhaps your reluctance to
return to the old driving way
is because you have become
lazy. What are you being
taught by life? It might make
sense to consider what your
wife has learned from your

experience. Perhaps you
have learned that you are
being invited by life to
explore the possibilities of
being a more laid-back
achiever!
