S Farming the & planet's beat Robert Galster News Reporter robert@nsnews.com STEPHEN Smith left his parents’ West Vancouver home in 197] at the age of 21. Back then he was a kid who had attended UBC's theatre department for qwo years and talked of being a musician. Since then he and his parmer of more than 20 years have bought a picce of land near Golden, cleared it and managed to raise two children on it. He also managed to write and record a CD: Glimpse Into Infinity. “I was secking a lite that was pure and simple,” said Solstice. “It takes a long time to take a piece of raw land and turn it into a working farm — that’s what kept me from my music.” Now, he is back in his old stomping grounds clutching the CD — 25 years in the making — which he recorded closer co home near Golden. So far his marketing strategy seems to be working. He visited music stores in West Vancouver with the goal of convincing them to carry the discs and succeeded. Both Park Royal oudets, HMV and Future Shop agreed to stock his record- ing and to date Solstice reports encouraging sales. In fact just after visiting the HMV store, he ran into three girls from New Zealand who had just purchased a CD player. Being one with a tine eye for a defining moment, he approached the girls and introduced himself suggesting his be che first CD to be played ‘on their new player. “We went into the mall to plug it in,” said Solstice. “I assumed one of them was going to buy it (but) all three of them bought one.” The CD features a sound that, in his words, is like nothing else. Calling it solar rock, Solstice says “the songs challenge humanity with a huge new goal and direction presented in an upbeat, posi- tive and unique new sound ... which speaks of life and reverence NEWS Cirly Goodman INFINITY Solstice has returned to West Vancouver to for this magnificent planet earth.” said.
