Rain forest trail

THE Greater Vancouver
Regional District (GVRD) has
been instrumental in providing
a new North Shore trail
through one of the oldest rain
forests in the world.

And the public is invited to watk it
this Sunday at the Seymour River harch-
ery’s annual open house.

The trail winds its way through part
of the 5,200-heetare Seymour demon-
stration forest, the site of ancient
Douglas fir, red cedar and Sitka spruce
trees, some of which are estimated to be
nearly 800 years old and 300 feet (90
m) tall.

“Most people aren’t aware of the
beauty back there, the primeval trees
and the wildlife,” said Bill Ryan, a diree-
tor and past president of the Sevmour
Salmonid Society.

The 1.7 km gravel and boardwalk
trail cose $173,000 to build and was

Construction by the International
Woodworkers’ Associ, ‘on began on the
trail in October 1997 and was complet-
ed fast February.

The trail also provides access to
salmon and trout spawning channels
and pools built by the hatchery, as well
as being linked directly to the hatchery
itself.

But not everyone is happy about its
construction.

Will Koop. who belongs ro a
Vancouver-based organization calle
Friends of the Warersheds, said he thinks
the GVRD has gone overboard in the
construction of the trail.

“There is way too much matenal on
what should be an all-natural traii. And
it will become a hiability when algae and

to 4 p.m, will also feature the release of

several thousand young coho salmon
inte the Seymour River to demonstrate
the hatchery’s function.

The hatchery rears about 1.2 million
salmon and trout a year.

“The open house provides a rare
wilderness experience for the whole
family, right on metropolitan
Vancouver’s doorstep,” said Seymour
Salmonid Society president Owen
Hackett.

The GVRD and the federal Ministry
of Fisheries and Oceans are major sup-
porters of the hatchery, which also relies
on $10-membership fees. and corporate
and public donations.

Free buses provided by Pacific Coach
Lines will take open house visitors from
the Rive Lake parking loc in North
Vancouver to the hatchery in the
Seymour River valley.

There will also be a barbecue for vis-
itors.
