Nanny nabs heroin break By Anna Marie D'Angeic News Reporter A North Vancouver nanny who claimed she was just a casual heroin user left court on Feb. 5 without a criminal record. Jennifer Mary Aldrich, 19, pleaded guilty to heroin pos- session. Police found a “flap” of heroin (0.2 grams) while search ing her after she was arrested for shoplifting at Wal-Mart on Dec. 4, 1996. Aldrich was caught stealing black panties, candy, hair dye and a pen at the Capilano Mall store, according to police. The value of the items was $31.07, according to police. Aldrich also pleaded guilty to shoplifting. Federal Crown lawyer Jay Straith argued that Aldrich should have 2 criminaf record in connection to the heroin charge. He did not accept the notion that someone could be a casual user of heroin. “This is right up there with ‘industrial park.” There is no such thing as a casual heroin user,” said Straith. Aldrich’s legal representative argued that the part-time nanny and part-time UBC student should not have a record because she works in the child-care field. The prosecuting lawyer asked for straight probation without a conditional discharge. The sentence would have carried a criminal record. Straith said that giving Aldrich no criminal record sent the wrong message about heroin use to the public in gener- See Drug pag: V% WEST Vancouver Spontaneous win students will B.C. at the Canadian ismproyv Games next spring in Ottawa. Phil Heard is the general manager of the Molson Indy. Race organizers are trying to find a new home for the annu- al event as development takes over the existing Site. He said a race course along Third Street, Forbes, Esplanade and the Low Level Road was one of five sugges- tions s Vancouver resident forwarded to Heard. Two of his five suggestions are on the North Shore. The other would see racers steer around the Coach House, and race in the Lillooet and Purcell Way area. Another race fan suggested the Fullerton Flats area. But the (50-acre) 20-hectare waterfront site isn’t big enough, Heard said. . i i IMREAPIDLUBE jp. 1 No appointment necessary I Engine coolant « Windshield washer fisid « Power j steering fluid © Transmission fluid ¢ Brake fluid expires Feb 28/97 j pLONSDALE & 13TH 9988-4050 He added 52.6 hectares (130 acres) is a minimum site size needed for the race. In addition, a race course needs a good road system, Icts of open parking lots, and room for enough grandstands to make the race viable. When asked about having the race on the North Shore, he said: “I think it could be wonderful. We would have no problems coming to the North Shore if we thought there was a good location for it.” Heard added the North Shore has the necessary access and infrastructure such as hotels, restaurants and bars, to hold the-race. He hasn’t found a good location on the North Shore yet. Instead, organizers are focusing on sites in Surrey and reconfiguring the race in its cur-. rent location, said Heard. The Squamish band pro- posed a site on its land near the Lions Gate Bridge. But the site was rejected because the area does not have enough roads and other amenities.
