Fearnley lane new face on council By Robert Galster News Reporter WITH only one new kid on the block, North Vancouver City council will remain mostly unchanged for the next three years. In an apparent show of voter support, those North Vancouver City resi- dents who actually bothered to cast a ballot re-elected all the incumbents. However, only a paltry 18.72% of eligible voters made the trip to the polling booths. Coun. John Braithwaite topped the councillor polls with 3,349 votes while Mayor Jack Loucks beat out his closest challenger, Dick Campbell, by a whopping 2,588 votes. Braithwaite said he’s at a loss when it comes to explaining the city’s low voter turnout, bur adds it has been the case as long as he can remember. “Tr’s (low voter turnout) a histo- ry in North Vancouver City,” said Braithwaite. “It’s either that people are apathetic or they are happy — whatever the reason.” As for the next three-year term, Braithwaite said he expects council to focus on the development of the city’s lands in Lower Lonsdale as well as making some decisions on the future of the Fullerton Fill area. On a smaller scale, Braithwaite said he hopes the new council will curb rezonings in single-family areas of the city — particularly the mid-block applications which he said tend to put pressure on couneil to rezone the rest of che block later. As for his future, Braithwaite didn’t cule out the possibility of taking a run at the mayor's chair, but didn’t commit himself either saying, “the options are open ... nothing is closed.” Meanwhile Canadian Occidental Petroleum technician Bob Fearnley, who replaces retiring Coun. Bill Bell, said he doesn’t expect any problems as a result of being the only new councillor. He said he has spoken to all the councillors and the mayor and looks for- ward to joining them on council. “I's been very warm,” said Fearnley. “I think we all realize the clection’s over... now we have to get on with the job that we have in front of us.” The new council will meet for the first time on Dee. 9. .
