With wit and cons sion she examines the lives of people you would rub elbows swith ata Tim Horton's donut shop anywhere across Canada. The writing is spare and unob- trusive, and hee ear for dia logue (Coady is also a phay- wright) is exceptional, In fact, it is the dialague, hilarious and realistic, thar really makes the characters leap if the page. For all of the dark subject mat- ter, Coady keeps the tone of the novel unsentimental, leav- ened with just the right amount of black humour. It is no wonder that Strange Heaven is up for a Governor- General's award. It is a very impressive debut, from a writer with a bright career ahead of her.
