ICBC’s mission then was to bring equity and fairness to auto insurance in BC, and to ensure that the lion's share of investment dollars stayed at home to help build the provincial economy. We have held up our end of the bargain. Fairness is built into the way ICBC sets auto insurance rates. As a BC motorist, your premiums are based on something you can control — your driving record —rather than your age or gender. ICBC has also kept its promise of economic benefits. We invest in HIGHLIGHTS Community BC, and any earnings we make stay at home to benefit the BC driving public. Because we are required only to break even over the long term, we are able to return a higher portion of premium dollars back to our policy- holders ~ in fact, an average of 95 cents of each premium dollar is paid out in claims and related costs. Last year we paid out almost $2 billion in claims, most of which went to BC businesses and profes- sionals such as auto repair shops, glass shops, doctors, lawyers, towing companies and rehabilitation thera- pists. Aside from the 5,100 British Columbians we employ directly, Driving Claims Tips Service Autoptan sales provide a living for over 900 independent insurance bro- kers, in virtually every BC community. Still, times change, and we have changed with them. ICBC no ionger holds 4 monopoly on auto insurance — for 20 years we have competed with private insurers on optional coverage. In the last six months we have introduced two major pricing initia- tives - RoadStar Gold and the Road Sense Dividend — to reward safe dri- vers and lower premiums. And changes are on the way to make our premiums even more competitive. But ICBC is more than “just” an insurance company.
