Vancouver police arrested
a pair of suspects aged 17
and 18 after a van stolen from
the Horseshoe Bay area had
ploughed into a Vancouver
City patrol car in the Stanicy
Park Causeway while being
chased by a West, Van police
car.

Municipal police reported
the chase began after they
had received a report from
Horseshoe Bay that a van,
belonging to Neil Howard
Wilson of 525-9th Street,
New Westminster had been
stolen at the bay.

Wild chase ends with
arrest of hitchhikers

across Lions Gate Bridge
and along the causeway
where Vancouver police
joined in.

‘Savage’ murderer

gets life sentenc

A convicted murderer
whose actions were describ-
ed in Vancouver Supreme
Court as “brutally savage
and showing ‘extreme

cowardice’’ has been sent-,

enced to life imprisonment.

In passing sentence upon
the accused, Ronald Roger
Gourgon, aged 32, of Van-
couver, Mr. Justice R.P.
Anderson, said Friday that
while the North Vancouver
slaying was not in the

‘category of a contract killing,

‘I cannot conceive of a
worse second degree mur-
der’’

The judge was referring to
the savage fatal stabbing in

the Lynn Valley home last

August 19 of hotel executive

- Andreas Stamatakis, 35 and

the wounding of Stamatakis’
35-year old wife, Nansi and
her 61-year old mother,
Marie Maratos.

Mr. - Justice: Anderson, in
giving a life sentence,
ordered that Gourgon not be
eligible for parole until he
has served at least 15 years
of his life term. .
