According to Insurance Bureau of Canada, approx- imately 75 cents of every dollar of claims cost goes to pay for repairing damaged vehicles and other property damage while the remaining 25 cents covers the cost of bodily injury payments. To demonstrate the in- creasing cost of parts, paint and labour, 122 actual ap- praisals from IBC Appraisal Centres across Canada were selected a random in January 1982. Early in 1982, each of these appraisals was updated to show current parts and labour prices. The total bill for 122 cars was $103,040.53 in January, 1981. From 1981 to 1982 the cost of a Toyota Celica hood panel climbed from $163.95 to $206.60, up 26 per cent, and the door moulding for a Chevrolet Monte Carlo from $16.95 to $25.95, an increase of 53 per cent. In the same period, a fender for a V.W. Rabbit climbed 20 per cent, from $138 to $179 and bumper brackets for an AMC Jeep jumped 41 per cent, from $109.50 to $154.03.
