(Terry Peters photo) Aiming for a faster Formula With a boost from the NEWS The North Shore News is not only getting bigger and better all the time, but is also getting faster. Racing fans in B.C. as well as many other parts of the country and the United States will be seeing the white car with the News Logo on the front at a number of Formula Vee races during the up- coming season. Marty Knoll, a 23 year old auto technician from North Van, owns and operates the sleek machine which is being sponsored by the News and Minit Tunc. Knoll, like most auto racers, and unlike’ the popular image, is a quict and serious young man who has been on the racing circuit for the past two years. He is one of a breed of Auto breaks even but clas up North Shore racers who are starting to make their mark in the exotic world of auto racing. After 12 races last season Knoll placed second in the B.C. region and eighth out of 32 drivers in the’ [n- ternational Series. This year, with a new car, the North Shore driver will be looking to improve his Conference position in the many events. Knoll recently purchased a ‘Beach’ Forumula Vee and is presently preparing the machine for the upcoming race season. He has hand built the body out of sheet metal, and is hoping for a faster car than his last year's model. Knoll is not too sure how he was bitten by the racing bug. It just seems to be something in his blood. None of his family are all that sports minded, but he has always had the love for the pure form of racing cars. Claiming he 1s ‘not fearless’, Knoll says he has simply calculated the risks against the challenge and salisfaction of the sport and decided the risk was worth it. Racing under the jurisdiction of the Sports Car Club of B.C. which is under the Canadian Automobile Sports Clubs, Knoll will be in action April 5-6 at West- wood in an _ International Conference of Sports Car Clubs meet. The ICSCC is a collection of clubs in the Pacific Northwest. Events are held at Westwood, Seattle, Portland, Spokane and Victoria. The Formula designation means the cars consist of open wheel, single seat racing Cars that are divided into three classes, cach with their own ‘formula’ or specifications set down in the rule books.
