For a municipality that has so many miles of coastline, it is deplorable that so few of those miles have been dedicated to open land for public use. Sure sow is the time to secure the last few waterfront lots and avoid the blockage of the waterfront in this Ambleside area. it is with the above in mine, therefore, that | im- plore you once and for all to rescind any idea of develop- ment of the waterfront in the area between 13th and 18th Streets and keep this area for open land for all the public to enjoy. Lois A. Millington West Vancouver (AN OPEN LETTER to Jack Homes, Secretary-Manager, Vancouver SPCA in reply to his letter ‘‘Story of Injured Dog Wrong’’ in The News of November 23.) Mr. Homes: I do not like to be publicly accused of lying, Sir, no mat- ter how veiled the implica- tion. My statement that it took one and a half hours for the SPCA ambulance to ar- rive on the scene is indeed very true and could be easily verified. On the evening of October 22, at fifteen minutes to eight, my husband and |! came across the dog in ques- tion. He was lying in the mid- die of the road, in shock and bleeding from the nose and mouth. Another motorist had stopped to help, and while my husband carefully moved the dog to a safer location, the other gentleman and I left in an attempt to find someone nearby who would place a call to the SPCA. My call was placed by the resident in the house directly behind the dog, the other call was placed from the home next door. I am sure those people know their ‘own addresses. You received two other calls, Mr. Homes, which you make no mention of. One came from the North Van- couver District Fire Dept. who had been alerted by a passing motorist. The other call came from Constable Ross Elliott (RCMP North Vancouver). Constable Elliott arrived on the scene five minutes after we did and stayed there until the am- bulance arrived at twenty minutes after nine. My hus- band and | had left the dog with the constable at 9:15 pm as we were already very late for a planned evening out. We passed the ambulance on the parkway at 9:17 pm. Constable Elliott, at our re- Teach respect for democracy Dear Editor I would like to thank the people who supported me in the recent municipal election. Your confidence in me is very much appreciated. To those who worked on, and con- tributed to, my campaign, a special thank-you. 1 would also like to urge the 80 per cent of the elec- [_] torate who did not exercise their franchise to do so in the future. It is so important to be aware of the issues that af- fect our community and to participate in the political process. If we do not demonstrate our dedication to the democratic system, we should not be surprised if our children develop a disrespect for it. Congratulations to the other School Board and Aldermanic candidates, not only those who were elected but also those who were not, but whose sincere efforts en- sured that the.election issues were raised and debated. As to the animal’s care once it reached the clinic, | can only believe what I was told. | called the clinic at 9:30 the following Monday morn- ing to inquire about the dog’s condition. The woman who answered the phone could not give me the information I wanted. Her explanation was that a doctor had not as yet seen the animal. She said that the doctor was about to start his rounds and if I could call back in a couple of hours they would be able to tell me the extent of his injuries. When I called back I was told the dag had a bruised eye and an ear infection. My argument is not so much AGAINST the SPCA as itis FOR animals. My con- cerns in this direction should put us on the same team. Why not take my complaints as constructive criticism and use them as indicators where improvements can be made. Mrs. S.
