Home of the Handyman Proper Surface Preparation An exterior paint job shouid last for years. So, there's nothing more frustrating than to spend hours painting the exterior of your home only to find the paint cracking, peeling or blistering under the effects of wind and weather. It's unfortunate, but with a few simple preliminary steps and appropriate applica- tion techniques, it can be prevented. This means proper surface preparation is, tf you'll excuse the pun, of prime importance To begin with, you must make sure the area is clean. All dirt, grease, dust etc., should be removed. Hosing down should do the job. Better still, tackle the job with your car brush and hose and a strong detergent. It may take a little longer, but is well worth the effort in the end. Where mildew is evident, app- ly a solution of 1-cup Clorox, 1/3-cup Trt-Sodium Phosphate crystals and 1-cup detergent in 1 gallon of water to the area. Allow to dry, rinse clean and wipe thoroughly, then let dry again. To promote proper adhesion of the paint to the surface it must be smooth and dull as well Here's where you should take care to scrape off blistering and peeling paint with a scraper or wire brush. A blow-torch, power sander or paint remover will take the area down to bare surface in a reasonable time it that’s what you desire What is essential 1s that you leave no rough edges where moisture can seep in and accumulate Fill and patch cracks, gouges and other irregularities with filler or caulking For cement sur: taces use concrete Then sand untit smooth Now's the time to apply an undercoat, primer or sealer This apples whether the entire surface is bare or just a portion is SCraped or sanded Priming ‘provides a good base for paint adhesion and stops metal sur taces from oxidizing or rusting And of course you tl apply the undercoat in dry weather and al temperatures no less than 50°F Now at the North Shore Home Hardware store nearest you, an - 7 B8 - Wednesday, June 1, 1983 - North Shore News B9 - Wednesday, Jume 1, 1983 - North Shore News If you've been the victim of persistent cracking or peeling in the past, consider investing in more adequate venting in walls and/or soffits. Minimum ventilation requirements for walls and soffits should amount to 1/100 of the total surface of the roof area. For areas under windows, caulking should help prevent rain and moisture from getting inside the wall. Occasionally peeling and blistering are caused by wet in- sulation and no amount of ven- ting or specific paint formula- tions can alleviate them. For- tunately this kind of problem ts rare. Since you've spent so much time priming the surface, dou- ble the effectiveness of your preparation by taking care to -apply your top coat properly.
