While rare, ex- pensive examples still are sought for their antiquarian value by comparatively few dedicated collectors, more common, less expensive specimens now are bought purely for their decorative -value by a large number of people. Whether their primary concerns are the curious errors and ommissions made by early cartographers or merely size and colouring, collectors find that a little learning can go a long way in determining the price of a map. One might begin by reading the basic reference works by such authors as Lloyd Brown, Louis Kar- pinski, R.A. Skelton and R.V. Tooley. These can help in estimating the ages of undated maps and in recognizing the works of renowned cartographers. Almost all maps of the late iSth and carly 16th centuries originally formed parts of books, usually atlases such as the ‘‘Nuremberg Chronicle” issued by Dr. Hartmann Schedel of Nuremberg, Germany, in 1493. At that time, the issuing of individual maps was un- new information about some part of the world. As these facts were reported, the errors that beset earlier maps gradually were corrected. A number of distinguished cartographers emerged from this period, among them Mercator, Ortelius and their disciples. Today. their maps are looked upon as classics.
