There will be a continu- ing heavy demand for mort- gage funds during 1978, al- though perhaps down some- what from the high levels of 1977, according to the pre- | sident of the Canadian Ban- kers’ Association (CBA). Rowland C. Frazee said in his annual report to the CBA’s annual meeting in Ottawa that new mortgage approvals by the banks last year totalled $6.09 billion as against expected demand ‘of about $4.5 billion. Frazee, president of The Royal Bank of Canada, fore- cast 1978 new approvals as in the area of $5.82 billion, down about 4.4 per cent from a year earlier. “This reduction should not be seen as indicating a lack of available funds or willingness to provide them, so much as that anticipated [ia demand for the year will be considerably less than in 1977 when actual require- ments far outstripped earlier forecasts.” - Frazee’s report listed mortgage loans outstanding | from the banks as of May 17, 1978, at $12.48 billion, up more than 26 per cent. from $9.89 billion a year earlier. Of the latest total, mort- gages under the National Housing Act increased 32.3 per cent to $7.54 billion and conventional mortgages were up 18.1 per cent to $4.94 billion. | “It is important to note — also,” Frazee said, “that these figures cover only | mortgages’ made by the banks. directly and do not include. the very substantial advances made by some banks’ mortgage affiliates.” \ Page 34, December 6, 1978 - North Shore News ~ under royal palms with the heavens for a roof.
