Shore Winter Club expands Midget hockey progr The North Shore Winter Club has taken a unique team = ap- proach to Midget ‘A’ hockey for the 1980-81 season with the ap- pointment of head coach Bill Bowles and assistants Ken An- derson Jr. and Mike Bissell. Bowles and his staff take over from Vern Moberg, who has moved to the Nor- Wes Caps of the British Columbia Junior Hackey League. Mark Wills, assistant to Moberg, will remain as coach of a Midget ‘B' team. ‘The Hockey Committee of the North Shore Winter Clubs feels the team ap- proach to coaching,will allow all the Midget ‘A’ coaches time to work with other coaches which include more than 775 boys and girls,’ says Ralph Haugland, past chairman of the Hockey Committee. Andersona and Bissell worked as assistants with Nor-Wes Caps and, in Bowles, NSWC has one of fhe most respected men in coaching development in the Greater Vancouver area. Bowles is a high school teacher and runs the annual hockey school at NSWC each August. Bowles, Anderson § and Bissell are all instructors for the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association's coaching development program. Besides hockey, more than 1,200 family members participate in curling, tennis, racquetball, swimming, keep fit classes, figure skating, bridge and social functions involving all members of the family in many age groups. Last season was the 2lst year of the NSWC hockey program and there were 37 teams competing from beginners to seniors. The club hosted two major tournaments during the _ season, the Midget ‘A’ group during the Christmas holiday and the Pee Wee ‘A’ division at the Easter break. These tournaments are annual affairs and they will be international affairs this coming season.
