A26 - Sunday News, November 29, 1981 EEE community round up ‘at “One of the worst things about a move to a new city is that the telephone never rings for the first few months,” said one recent arrival to West Vancouver. “This move has been a difficult one,” remarked another, “because my children are older now and I. miss the contacts with other mothers that I used to automatically make through my children’s activities.” “A move in the winter is tough. In the summer neighbours are outdoors gardening and one at least meets them that way.” “My husband is apt to be transferred again in two years and [m_ certainly hoping there'll be a Newcomers’ group in our next city.” A move is an adjustment. If you are new to West Vancouver, or know a woman who is, the West Vancouver Newcomers’ Club may be of interest. It is designed purely on social lines to help make a newcomer’s move into the community easier. Women who are new to West Van meet on the first Monday of each month at St. David’s United Church at Taylor Way and Upper Levels at 8 p.m. The monthly meetings gencrally feature a speaker, followed by a social coffee time. Speakers this fall have in- cluded a lawyer who spoke on changes in family law, a doctor who showed slides on his travels as a cruise ship’s doctor, and a make-up artist who demonstrated on two Newcomers. In addition, members can choose to participate in any or all of the other activities which are outlined in a monthly newsletter. There is usually a tour each month to a spot of interest and a recent trip to the Vancouver law courts at Robson Square was a popular example. Generally the members mect for lunch once cach month, and this has proved an cnjoyable way to try some of the marvellous restaurants Vancouver has to offer to newcomers. A mixed cvent is generally held cach month so partners are involved too, and a Thanksgiving Day brunch held at a member's home was a very successful cvent. There are extras too.
