New instructor course for Red Cross MORE COMMUNITIES will benefit, and more people will grow, with Red Cross’ new Water Safety Instructor training program. According to Cathy Walker, Red Cross Water Safety Program Co- ordinator, the redesigned program will allow more peo- ple to become water safety in- structors. As a result, more communities will benefit from access to highly-trained professional instructors. ‘*We wanted to make our instructor training program more available to more peo- ple. We did this by develop- ing a program with two levels of training. Most people tak- ing swimming instruction are in the first four levels of the Red Cross Water Safety pro- gram. And the first stage of the instructor training pro- gram qualifies you fo teach these first levels. You no longer need to be a master swimmer,’’ said Walker. ‘*However, if you wish to further develop your instruc- ting skills and want to teach the more advanced levels of the Red Cross Water Safety program, you can take the se- cond level of the instructor training program,’’ she added. Both levels of the training program, offered by local aquatic centres, teach skills in supervision, communication, class management and planning. ‘*The Water Safety In- structor training program has been designed to give you what ‘you need td Become an effective instructor, plus flex- ibility and competitive edge in today’s demanding marketplace,’’ Walker continued. ‘“‘The program produces professionals—in skills and attitudes.’’ The first Canadian Red Cross Water Safety Instruc- tor II course is being offered at West Vancouver Aquatic Centre August 13 - 17, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. For more information please call The Canadian Red Cross Society Water Safety Service 879-7551.
