Parent or quardian must accompany those 18 years or younger. 3 day by Mike Finnegan Actress-singer : Betty Garrett has” enjoyed great luck in jumping from one top-rated TV series to another but the wide-ranging career of the 59-year-old St. Joseph, Mo., native has been filled with several lucky - jumps between theater. movies and TV . How do fars on the street recognize her nowadays? ‘They're still calling me irene Lorenzo,” the bubbly Miss Garrett chuckled during a recent lunchtime chat in 2 ‘Hollywood restaurant, referring to her role a few years back on -CBS-TV’s popular comedy show ‘All in the Family,’ “‘but I’ve. been very fortunate going from one network to another and landing in the No. 1 show each time.” The latter series, of course, is _ another comedy, ABC-TV's ‘Laverne and Shirley,” in which she portrays the title characters’ sardonic fand- lady, someone quite tevelheaded in - dealing with her wacky tenants, much in the same way trene could * handle Archie Bunker time and time again. She's having a pretty good time doing it “It’s a fun show to be associated with,”" she said, ‘“‘and the girls (Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams) reaily work hard to get their routines . just right. ‘1 think some of their " physical comedy is just as clever as say, Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and. _ Costello. And whereas the great movie comedians had weeks of rehearsal to perfect their bits of - business, Penny and Cindy have just a few days to prepare.” . “In years to come," she contin- . ued, “their stuff is going to be. ' considered classic . along with the all-time great comedy routines.” She .also praised the rest of the ‘Laverne and Shirley’ company but that praise didn't extend to the medium of television itself, about — _- which she has mixed feelings as an - actress who co-starred in several -well-remembered musicals and ‘dramas both on stage and screen. “To me, television, at least this kind of filmed situation comedy like ‘Laverne and Shirley,’ reflects the worser sides of theater and movies. Filming before a studio audience, you get the same nervous jitters as working in the theater. There's also the technical side of filming, with a great deal of waiting around for your scene to get underway and new. set-ups to be made.” Miss Garrett worked in several television drama and variety shows “in the 1950's and reflected that TV’ today is quite a changed medium since those early days. “Everything was live those days, mistakes and all, and you had to give your best the first time." she remembered. | “Today you're thankful to be able to go back and do things over again.” Cee _ Six years ago, while quite active on the stage in regional productions | of ‘Plaza Suite’ and ‘And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little,” she decided to take the role of the feminist neighbor of the _ conservative Bunkers on ‘All in the Family’ and left an indelible mark as the spunky lrish Catholic who tangled with ’ Archie Bunker's narrow mind. Yet after a. couple of. seasons, the Larenzos were phased out and Miss Garrett related the reason. “Vince Gardenia (who played her husband Frank Lorenzo) was enjoy- ing a great popularity at that time with an Oscar nomination for ‘Bang the Drum Slowly’ and other acting projects,”” she said, “and he asked to leave the show when he was offered a role in the new Neil Simon play (1974's ‘God's Favorite,” which turned ont's Ph Pa ye of the laywright’s few flops).”” . For one thing, she put together a one-woman musical show for theater audiences entitled ‘Betty Garrett and Other Songs." it opened in May 1974 to enthusiastic notices _ and won her the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for her perfor- mance. Wherever she has_ sub- sequently performed her show, audiences have cheered her. In fact, the curtain will go up on another ; - edition of the solo musical in Los Angeles next month. then, too, came ‘Laverne and Shirley,” certainly a recent develop- ment in a career that has spanned close to 40 eventful years.
