The dumping ‘of - Senator Ray Perrault - from the federal cabinet has a wider ‘significance than the immediate loss of B.C. influence in Ottawa. With no ‘elected Liberal MPs, this pro- vince is now. represented at the national level by.a single appointed minister, Senator Jack Austin. It-is inconceivable tht he alone will be able.to handle. all the B.C. concerns hitherto shared with Senator Perrault. _ Fhe latter (who should know the size of the job after nine years) has described the situa- . tion as “quite ludicrous”. B.C. Liberal leader ‘Shirley McLoughlin calls it “a slap in the face © for the party and B.C.” Ms McLoughlin is right, of course. Four of po ‘Quebec. TNE We A LADY — oops, sorry! a woman — named 1 Catherine Kerr slaps me patiently on the wrist for. my sexist language. She was kind enough to enclose with her letter material designed to educate me out of the deplorable habit, provided I am interested in making an “effort at self- improvement” as she puts it. You bet, Ms. Kerr! I'm a self-improvement nut, even though there ‘isn't. too much . to show for it. But I confess I'm finding some of the “Guidelines For Nonsexist Language” you were good enough to send me a trifle confusing. Their authority is pretty intimidating. They consist of extracts from Her and His. A Report of the Status of Women Committee of the Nova Scotia Confederation of University Faculty Association on Sexist Language and the University. You ignore a body as august as that at your peril. But let’s run, qver a few of the little.’ ‘problems the Guidelines are still causing me. They begin with a roundhouse swing at the world “man” as a generic term. Forget it, they command. Say instead “humankind”, “men and women”, “women and men”, “the individual”, “person”. But that's just for starters. Banned are the following (with the nonsexist tran- slation in brackets): chairman § (“chairperson”), workman (“worker’’), foreman (“supervisor’’), businessman/woman (“bus- iness executive”), policeman (“police officer”). HIS AND HERS A title like “Mankind and Social Change” must. be translated as “The Individual and Social Change” (1 never knew “mankind” meant “individual” until now.). “Man-made” must become “synthetic”,of course. And “the common man” is kicked out in favor of “the average person”. All very colorful. “Man the desk” is also out. Instead, “staff the desk”. Hence, presumably, “staff the guns”, “staff the barricades” and “staff the lifeboats”, The guidelines about he, she, his, her and him get ' even trickier. For example, “the gricvor must exercise his right” is a no-no. Replace it by “the grievor must exercise his or her right”. If you then need to continue the sentence it will have to go something like: “.... by bringing his or her complaint to the notice of his or her union ‘spokes- person and asking that he or she take steps to prevent him or her from. being unfairly penalized.” In the case of “anybody”, “somebody” ‘or “nobody”, the guidelines advise, this litle problem can be overcome by using the plural pronoun. Don't say “anybody who wants Ais teaching evaluated" . but positions . ha t: wublic employees whose have been. ter | cuntil their. termination ‘date, ' with the effective date. for * most being October, 31, 1983. Some even have nine months notice, to June 30, 1984. Also, a comprehensive termination compensation package is being put together for civil servants and ould include re- training, re-location, early and other retirement benefits. The Social Credit Govern- ment asked for consultation with the public sector unions to discuss severance provi- sions, but the initial meetings were boycotted by the unions. Instead, they chose to demonstrate and protest. The government plan to by 7 Noel Wright ‘ have 25 per cent less direct “government employees by pared (619 1984 as com- ar sad remains intact. “anybody who wants their teaching cvaluated”. It does serve their. purpose to try: to. get everyone in the unions to fight the govern- ment. Their fighting didn't just start July 7. When the government in- troduced the restraint pro- gram in February 1982, union leaders said it wouldn't work and fought it, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on their “catchup” campaign—acam- paign that defied the economic reality of the times. ‘Hundreds of thousands of dollars went into the socialist election campaign from the unions’ fee money, yet the people of this province decided otherwise May 5. Now, union members are be- ing told that hundreds of CONTINUED ON PAGE A7 shit “Mrs.” regardless ¢ of marital Status (not “Dr. and Mrs. John President”, please, but “Dr. John President and Ms. Sally President”). And mever, never demean a woman by calling her a “lady” — a term described as insulting and trivializing. Finally, the Guidelines warn about direct quotations from unenlightened writers of the past. If they're sexist, we're instructed to paraphrase them as indirect quotations, using nonsexist language. That's going to be quite a job. Check any dictionary of quotations under WOMEN and you'll quickly discover alas, that the giants of literature from Shakespeare to Shaw have been predominantly male chauvinist pigs. Even some female writers like Madame De Staci have been just as rude about women as many of the men. Other male warned about their cunning. And those who praise women have invariably broken every rule in the Guidelines, too — by being condescending about it. No doubt that’s cxactly what Ms. Kerr has in mind as she seta out to educate us latter-day scribblers. And while she waits for us to master nonsexist. newspeak. she may at Icast find some crumbs of comfort in the i8th century French dramatist Joseph de Segur. “Men say of women what pleases them,” the old sexist rascal wrote. “Women do with men what pleases them,” scribes have. made jokes of women or
