Add a cold frame and you can keep fresh greens on ' the table almost all year. Add a small berry patch and you're well on your way to becoming a stranger to the supermarket produce department. Good eating begins with winter planning so this course will show vou how te grow superior vegetables and smail fruits with a minimum of space and work. Planning, good soil care, the right seed varieties and a surprisingly small amount of time are all you need to make a small part of your backyard a reliable source of gourmet foods. The instructcr, an environmental biologist, has been teaching vegetable and fruit growing localiy for three years. The course fee includes a soil analysis and a selection of seeds to get every garden off to a good start. Class size is limited so that everyone wil! get personal _ attention. A course for those interested in easing the care of their houseptant collections. Techniques of placement, arrangement and maintenance of plants, groupings and single specimen plants wili be demonstrated. You will need a container 8’’ to 10’’ in diameter and at least 3’’ deep. Plants, soil, drainage, charcoai, and mulch will be provided (approximate retail value'$12). The course will also cover preblems and cures so please bring along your sick plants - or just a piece if it is a large one. There will be practical demonstrations wherever possible and slides will be shown to give examples of balconies in the Lower ’ Mainland. Participants may bring in-sick plants or pieces of plant for identification. Have you ever seen one? Would you like to grow them in your garden? This course uses slides to introduce the native wild flowers of B.C. and then progresses to the examination of wild flowers from Alaska, the European Alps and the Himalayas. The cultivation part of the course will stress the importance of preserving fragile wild flower areas and will explain: methods for obtaining, garden stock other than from collecting wild plants. The horticultural requirements for growing Alpine flowers, dwarf shiubs, bog and water plants and other wild plants will be shown together with simulated natural plant environments, such as peat beds, screes and bogs. Hints on photographing wild flowers will be included as well as an outline of good, locally accessible wildflower areas. Students will look at good cycle routes to be found locally and will examine cycling history, conservation practices while touring, and the cycling lifestyle. There will be one weekend major ride.
