the play is scrabbling for a

at the Vancouver Playhouse
— where it runs until March
17 — and if Odon von
Horveth’s Tales. from the
Vienna Woods conjures up
the image of a gay, frothy
musical operetta, kindly
- forget it.

For most of the
predominantly under-40
audience. which packed the
_ Playhouse for this Canadian
preraiere was Tales from the
Vienna Woods in fact, an
historical drama with a
strong social message which
could also have some
disturbing relevance to our |
‘present-day economy.

The story is set in the 7 :

English it’s an exceptionally
challenging play for any
theatrical group to un-
dertake. ;

Perhaps it’s hardly sur-
prising, therefore, that even
the talented Playhouse
company despite its
smooth and competent
performance directed by
Roger Hodgman — did not
quite meet the challenge.

As a first-hand account by
a native observer of the

nuances and subleties which
are extemely difficult to
interpret in the context of
present-day Vancouver. As

. a result, one was left with the

impression that the players
had mastered their lines and
polished their acts to
professional
without, however, really
understanding Horvath’s
fundamental message. The
same, one suspects, was
almost certainly true in the
case of 95 per cent of the

understanding was mainly
reflected in the almost
uniform weakness of
characterization, the players ~

_acting for the most part as

stereotyped symbols rather

than bringing alive Horvath’s
original flesh-and-blood

individuals. One noteworthy —
exception was Patricia
Hamilton who infused
genuine verve and sparkle
into her role as Valerie, the
middle-aged lady friend of
them all.
