Though her audience was. for the most part, yuounger than she had hoped for, her presentation clearly demonstrated how she had generated the kind of en- thusiasm among 10-year-olds which had prompted them to declare: “This can't be social studies — it’s too much fun!” She began with a lvely and informative background talk and then showed two National Film Board films, “Augusta” about an 88-year- ald Indian lady who hves alone im a log cabin at Soda Creek im the Cariboo, and “Kev Alec” about an 11- year-old Indian boy who lives with his cxtended family on an Indian reser- vation near Lillooet. CENTRE ON FILM Most of Hood's programs centre on NFB films. “NFB falms are real — they are of real people doing real things,” she sawi “Many of the films made in the US are acted and they ;just don't work most of the ime.” Hood says she makes a praciace of having vanous ethoic) groups speak for themselves “I never bhe to have other people talking about the Indians or ‘comes up,” ¢ Boucle’s whomever — I like them to present themselves.“ Nor is she shy about presenting reality. “I show what is real — children shouldn't have to be protected from birth and death and other facts of hfe.
