Library use Up as times get tougher LIBRARY USERS in North Vancouver District borrowed 617,663 books and other materials in 1982 for an average of 9.51 per resident, the library's recently published Annual Report reveals. Overall circulation was up four and a half per cent last year, ~with the biggest in- creases coming in the Children’s Department and at the Seycove Branch. There was also significant growth in usage of the services to the homebound and handicapped. Chief Librarian’ Enid Dearing suggests that the economic climate has much to do with the heavy library use. Books on resusmes, job- seeking and money management were in high demand, as was light fiction and “escapist” literature. Library programs. which are free. were often filled to capacity, especially those for children. There were many people using the libraries at all times of the day. not just during the traditionally busy evening and weekend periods. The year 1982 was also one of technological ad- vances in the library. The computer-produced catalo- gue became accessible to the public with the arnval of microfiche readers in each branch: it is hoped that by the end of 1983 the con- version of catalogue records from cards to microfiche will be complete, making the card catalogue obsolete. A popular addition to the hbrary's collection last year was the small collection of instructional video-tapes in the VHS format. Covering topics from aerobic dance to furniture ore-finishing = and dog training, the tapes are in high demand with do at vourselfers booking to the future. a Mayor opropect for some library staff was par Hoipation in preparation of the Capilano Feasibility Study The Capilano Library has for some years been Mruggling owith cramped quarters and a leaky roof the feasibility study now completed outhines opthons for the future of the branch The complete 1982) An nual Report of the Dastriet Library may be caamined at any of the hbrary’s three brane hes ' Be Water Wise Boo. my atid AlCOM Ol ate a de acdby tux 50% of all Dea UNG, aC rents mrocohyer ake cobicol - Wa det Re nS OR ety | oh | o_ PLAY IT SAFE!
