A popular school principal in North Vancouver, Spiekermann has an exten- sive community. service background throughout the North Shore and Bowen Island. He was the founding president of the Bowen Island Community School Association and served as school trustee in School District No. 46 (Sunshine Coast). Additionally, he has been the president of the Bowen Island Recreation Commis- sion and recently served a partial term as a director of the North Shore Neighborhood House. In accepting the NDP can- didacy, Spiekermann said this election had to take ac- count of the fact that 200,000 people are now unemployed in B.C. Squamish, in particular, had an unemployment rate of 40 percent. In West Vancouver there had been a 186 percent increase in the number of people seeking welfare assistance. There are literally thousands of people who want to enter the labor force and cannot, Spiekermann charged, because the Socreds’ top priority is towards football stadiums, television advertising, ex- pensive French wines and costly office furniture for highly placed civil servants.
