B4 - Sunday, April 24, 1983 - North Shore News by Andy Fraser It's only Canada QUICKLY NOW. How many out there know that Canada’s Olympic soccer team is playing Ber- muda May 8 at Swangard stadium in a qualifying match for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics? For an organization trying to bring the 1986 World Cup to Canada, the Canadian Soccer Association sometimes acts as though Promotion and_ publicity belonged on the porno shelf something only to be brought out after everyone has gone home or fallen asleep. The fact that the game is to be played at Swangard is, in itself, an indicator of just how much promotion the CSA plans on doing — and also. gives a_ regrettably realistic statement of our concern and care about our national teams — especially at the amateur level. Over the past couple of years the best amateur soccer players still in school have been plying their skills here on the west coast at the University of Victoria, UBC and Simon Fraser, and it is from this group of athletes that new national amateur coach Tom Bearpark will choose the bulk of his Olympic team for the up coming qualifying rounds. Since the program has been in operation, the amount of ink and en- couragement the team has received could probably be covered in total space by a couple of our What's Going On items in this paper. The sad thing is that at times, it seems this program, and almost all national team programs with the possible exception of hockey. suffer Joe Stonehouse baz Donaddiscns from the three strike syn- drome: Strike one: - The CSA — or whatever organizing body — either through lack of funds or knowledge, fails to do an adequate marketing job of their product to the press — making it almost impossible for said press to. give coverage. Strike two: - The press, for many rationalized reasons, prefers to give wide coverage to American sport stories — whether or not they have any relevance to Canada — and considers our national team programs, again excluding hockey, with little more regard than little league sports. Strike three: - Perhaps because of the above two strikes, or perhaps for some deeper, mystical reasons, Canadians by large frankly just don't give a damn when it comes to solely Canadian endeavors. Except when they lose when we immediately say, “Ah, we knew they were no good anyway.” All our sports have to have foreigners in the’ key Positions, because we figure they're better than us — figure that one out when lying quietly on the leather couch, Canada. We dote on things Amenican and not only in sport. Our movies, our magazines, Our consumer goods, our cars — well. make way for the Japanese Your Insurance Business!! Boing your autoplan and other msurance business fo us Our fast fan) Shepherd on that one — our television programs. In short, we appear to suffer from a massive dose of inferiority, bordering on the masochistic. Look how we castigate our own in sport. Notice how many times the local boy gets the raspberry from the sophisticated fans compared to the import. Almost always. Check out the response to a TV show and if it’s CBC we groan and know it’s bad — ignoring all the while the success rate of that par- ucular network in the rest of the world. If it’s foreign, it has to be better than our own. It’s no bloody wonder that Swangard stadium, which seats only 4,800 people will sull not be full when our national Olympic team takes on Bermuda in the first of two games in the Olympic qualifying rounds, May 8, Sunday, at 7:30 pm. And that’s disgusting.
