(Ellsworth Dickson photo) THINKING SLIM With all the ads for diets promising “easy weight loss,” why are so many peo- ple struggling to rid themselves of excess pounds? To understand how we gain or lose weight, we must first understand how the body utilizes food. We all know about calories, but what exactly are they? Basically a calorie measures the energy- producing value of food. Foods high in calories pro- duce a lot of energy. Foods with few calories produce lit- tle energy. The body is like an engine. If we consume more calories than we need, we store the calor‘es as fat and gain weight. If we consume fewer than we need, we lose we ght. It takes 3500 calories tc 1ake one pound of fat. To lose that pound, we must take in 3500 fewer calories than our bodies use. or 500 fewer calories daily to lose a pound in a week. It's as sim- ple as that. Simple, but not easy. As we all know who have tried it at least once, losing weight is not an easy process. Somewhere along the line, we have gotten the notion that everything we do should be effortless, instant and easy. Perhaps advertising is partially responsible for this, offering everything from “instant” oatmeal to “over- night” oven cleaners. We have somchow gotten the idea that there is a pill, mix, gadget or gimmick to solve every problem magically. Yet common sense tells us that if all those “instant” diet remedies. really worked, there wouldn't be so many overweight people. Anything worth having is worth working for. The only way to lose weight permanently is by be- ing willing to prepare and plan. Weight loss should be a o easy weight loss slow gradual process. Is it worth it? Ask anyone who has seen a wardrobe shrink from size 20 to size 9, or who has felt the increased pride and self-esteem and con- fidence that comes from do- ing something truly difficult very well. If you think you're ready for the challenge, find a diet plan that offers nutritionally balanced meals and a gradual, long-term weight loss. Look for a program that helps change your cating habits and also offers an ex- ercise program. And finally, strong sup- port helps. But look for the positive kind. No program should ever embarass you. Motivation is stronger when there’s someone to tell you how well you've done. Add this to some determination and effort and you'll soon have the kind of attitude that will find you the loser that wins. IT’S ALL IN YOUR MIND The noxt time you're sick, remember - it could all be in your mind. In the late 1950's) and carly 1960's, physicians did somcthing that would no longer be considered cthical by medical standards. They divided heart paticnts into two groups and told them they were going to have an operon that had proved ghly effective in relieving the chest pain of angina pectoris. Half the paticnts actually had the surgery performed, the other half were pul under anesthesia, had a minor incision made and closed on their chests and were awakened and told the operation had been pertormed. To the astonishment of surgeons across the country. the patients who had un dergone the “sham surgery” did better than the ones that had undergone the original MOST COMPLETE CLEANING SERVICE IN TOWN >INKA« CLEANERS & CONTRACTORS PRESENT THEIA SPECIAL CARPET CLEANING (LIVING ROOM. Thursday, August 27: A swoop on the allotment — yields a whole bowlful for the radish-eater, a whole potful of chard, a_ real bouquet of marigolds glowing on the dining-table. Have decided the rewards of gardening are incalculable how gross to even mention the twenty-two dollars! Friday, August 28: On the other hand, there’s this offer from Premier Bennett, a sort of crop insurance arrangement. Hmmmmm- mmm. Saturday, August 29: You got a green thumb? Then you know exactly what my one and only zucchini looks like. It'll have to gosome to make it as far as the dinner table. There's one in the garden to my left that must weigh two pounds. Sunday, August 30: Sunday's a great day around | the allotments. Lots of proud producers plucking peas. Weeders, waterers, whiners working the soil. Passerby pauses to ask why didn't I plant my stuff east and west, and keep everything from washing downhill. Answer, because ['m dumb. But wait till next year. The things I've learned! Monday, August 31: Pouring rain. Fall, now. You can taste it in the misty mornings. So I challenge Nature by putting in another row of radishes. The folks in the next farm have winter chard, why not winter radishes? Tuesday, September 1: On the weekend, someone brought in seaweed for the compost heap, but also a great constellation of starfish. Wonderful reddish purple, like a heavy drinker’s nose, but traced with golden veins. Wednesday, September 2: The friend on the farm north-east of mine, hating to let go of summer, brings down some more pea plants. We put them in with the others along the front and liberate some handy chicken-wire to encourage their upward mobility.
