Al2 - Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1981 - North Shore News 1's a gas-but Maplewood folk ar By NEWS STAFF MAPLEWOOD residents, already caught up in _the furore of the Hooker Chemicals chlorine issue, now find themselves in the middle of another industrial stink. Currently they focusing their attention on — and .turning their noses away from — the Mohawk, Oil recycling plant. - That is the direction from which many neighbors say the gassy smells are coming. Some residents of the area find the smell “nauseating” while others don't think it's much worse than “un- pleasant”. They’re undecided whether the odour is like natural gas or burned oil but what most of them seem to agree is that it comes from the direction of the Mohawk plant. The whiffs have drifted are _ around the area on a sporadic basis ever since the plant opened up about a year ago, the residents say. And in the past six months the smells have been oc- curring more often, to the point where neighbors now have to endure them about twice a week. “I can't go outside’ in it,” says Irene Ellie, a resident of Seymour River Place about a quarter-mile away from the plant. “I have to stay inside and close the windows or go somewhere else.” She’s had problems with allergies since she moved ‘into the area about a year ago. Her neighbor, Donna Heald, says the fumes make her eyes burn. The manager of a local apartment complex says the smell is so strong. that. he wishes he could leave the area when he’s working outside in it. The smells have been noticed as far away as the Second Narrows Bridge, depending on how the wind is blowing. The Mohawk plant has had a couple of mercaptan spills since it went into operation, manager Bob Robertson, which would produce | a “natural gas” odour, and it | does occasionally produce a. “hot oil” smell; he adds that it is not dangerous. The smell is produced by heating oil to 650°F and then passing it through a filter to get rid of metal con- taminants. The plant has had start-up says assistant * problems and has only been fully operational in the past three to four months, he. says. The Air Pollution Control branch has received some complaints, says Inspector Silvano Padoven, and engineering consultants are testing the filter emissions. district ' He says they'll be recommending “some sort of controls”. The re-refining plant uses what is called the “Phillips process” to clean oil in the most environmentally sound process yet devised in North America, says Robertson. Environmentally it's an improvement-over the acid- ° clay process used by other companies in the industry, which generates large quantities of sludge which then have to be disposed of, he says.” He adds ‘that the plant is still experimental and _ is being watched by people in the industry to see if it is’ viable.
