By PAT RICH Work on a new $7.25 | ‘million multi-purpose facility for Capilano College should begin this. fall and ‘be completed for the 1982-83 school year, according to college spokésmen. And the new building, to be constructed on the Lynnmour campus, will add 50 per cent to the total floor space of the college and allow college enrolment to increase. Approval for the new building was announced Friday by provincial Education Minister Brian- Smith during his first visit as education minister to the college. “The new building will enable the college to im- prove its service to students and the community in general,” Smith said. “The college will be better able to coordinate its career and business programs which are presently offered in scattered locations on the North Shore.” ‘DELIGHTED’ College President Paul Gallagher said he was “delighted” in the = an- nouncement that the facility had been approved. He said planning for the facility had been underway for two: years and that the Ministry of Education will handle the cost of con- struction. “The new facility will allow us to offer a broader range of programs,” Gallagher said. 50 per cent more space by 1982 He mentioned general mechanics. and health ° sei : as into” which the college is going to expand. He also said the college will be able to ex- pand its business related programs. The new building will provide a variety of in- structional facilities in- cluding three major workshops and classrooms. The building will allow the college to relieve its “ex- tremely overcrowded conditions,” Gallagher said. 70,000 SQ.FT. Allan Smith, the director of planning for the college, says the 70,000 square foot building will be constructed on the east side of the college between the north and south parts of the campus. A 17 metre rise in the area will mean the building will have a terraced effect, he said. Because of the choice of the construction side many of the trees between the north and south parts of the college will be retained. “Sod turning on the site should begin sometime in the late fall,” Gallagher said. He added it is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 1982, to be ready for use in September of that year. Tender calls for the numerous parts of the project have not yet been announced.
