NORTH Vancouver
City councillors attend-
ed six conferences —
one as far away as
Quebec — at a total
cost of just under
$27,000 in 1996.

Last week council unani-
mously approved those
expenses for the 1996 calen-
dar year, as well as each mein-
ber’s paycheque for serving as
an elected official.

Coun. John Braithwaite
topped the expense list at
$5,335.09, while Coun, Bob
Fearnley claimed no expenses.
He was elected in November
1996, replacing outgoing
coun. Bill Bell.

Councillors’ claims were
mostly due to conferences
attended. They included the
Federation of Canadian
Municipalities meetings in
Calgary, Lachine, Quebec and
Whitehorse; the Union of
B.C. Municipalities confer-
ence held in Penticton; the
Lower Mainland Municipal
Association (LMMA) annual
general meeting; and a
Greater Vancouver Regional
District (GVRD) trip to
