—_---- NEIGHBOURHOODS —— North Shore AN all-time Rest happened at Capilano Mall at che end of January: the six North Shore Toastmasters Clubs jointly set up a display booth to inform the public about the program. The booth, staffed with vol- unteers from all clubs was busy with passers-by, although the sun was shining that week- end. Toastmasters International is a non-profit: organization. It was established in 1924 in California and has since expanded to a world-wide network of clubs. Toastmasters clubs on the North Shore meet weekly to Jearn and practice public speaking and leadership skills, conducting meetings, active list-ning, evaluation and effee- tive communication skills. Me. Alan Gill, the leader of the troop, entered the contest oi the group’s behalf after the boys held a bottle drive to raise funds. On Jan. 31, representatives from the Encorp Authorized Depot, North Shore Bottle Depot, awarded the kids prizes, which included water botties, yo-yos and piggy bank cans, all made trom recycled materials. The scouts collected more than three pick-up trucks tull of used beverage containers and returaed them to the North Shore Bottle Depot on Donaghy Avenue, where they received more than $430 in refinds for bottles, cans and drink boxes they collected. Gill said the money raised would help cover the costs of” badges, crafts und camping uips, like one planned to the Sunshine Coast in April. The contest: served dual purposes. “The contest is meant to raise awareness oof — the fundraising potential that bot- te drives offer to groups like this one. The added benefit, of course, is that when groups hold bottle drives they are contributing to their commu: nity’s recycling solution,” said Tracy Farrell of Encorp Pacific.
