2nd PLACE FOR OUR COMMUNITY IN BLOOM The City of North Vancouver was presented with a second place award at the national Communities in Bloom Awards Celebration in Halifax last month. Medicine Hat, Alberta won with five out of a possible five blooms in our population category and North Vancouver received four blooms. The City of North Vancouver won tte 1998 provincial ‘Communities in Bloom’ championship for the population class of 20,001 - 50,000.“ It is important to note that this is our first year in national competition,” said Bill Granger, Manager of Parks and Environment for the City of North Vancouver. “The judges comments about our city were all very favourable and we gleaned some very good ideas from the other municipalities displays and through discussion with many elected officials, volunteers and staff from ninety-two other municipalities.” ‘Communities in Bloom’ is an enviromental awareness and municipal beautification program which is championed by the ‘Communities in Bloom’ committee chaired by councillor Stella Jo Dean. It’s an initiative designed to involve whole communities in the challenge of improving the visual appeal of Canadian cities, towns and villages. This year's national Communities In Bloom Award will be dispiayed in the foyer of City Hall beside the city’s 1998 provincial award. Dean and Granger have already plarined a meeting with the Communities in Bloom Committee - to discuss another entry for next year.
