YOU can all recite the preamble to Canada‘
of Rights and edoms, right? IT mean, it
in school just after the Lord's Prayer, sort
the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. It's not, you
say. Only in the United States. Pity!
For those who have only vague memories of a docu-
ment created to keep Quebec in Canada, the phra
inquiring in the news tis t week has been: “Wher
reporter Canada is founded upon principles that recogni
the supremacy of God and the rule of law.
The Humanist Association of Canada claims the ref-
erence to God in the Constitution is “offensive to millions of Canadians who are
non-Christian or non-religious” in a 1,000-signature petition presented in the
House of Commons by Burnaby-Douglas MP Svend Robinson. It suggests

instead the phrase: *...founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of

intellectual freedom and the rule of law.”

Robinson has been quoted as saying thar he personally believes the mention
of God in the Constitution should be removed nada cular society and
our constitution should de as inclusi possible.” But he and the Humanists
are obviously in the minority on this one. Robinson's fellow NDP MPs showed
their displeasure by staying out of the House when he made his presentation —
to a chorus of jeers. He was later banished to the party's backbenches for caus-
ing unnecessary embarrassment, for which he apologized while insisting that
MPs should retain the right to present unpopular minority views.

Mulgrave Schoo! is moving into a new state of the art facility ideally located
just north of the Upper Levels Highway at the Cypress Bowl exit. The school is
readily accessible from anywhere on the North Shore, North Burnaby and the
northern areas of Vancouver. Construction of the new school will start in the

susmmer of 1999.

A very limited number of places are available for 2000/01 in most grades from
Kindergarten to Grade 9 and a grade each year will be addec until we reach
Grade 12. Enroliment is now underway and places are expected to fill quickly.
