Set in small-town Ontario in the 1970s, the book is full of unravelling secrets: mur- der, loss, anger and paranoia ina Japanese Canadian com- munity whose occupants are more suspicious of cach other than of their Caucasian neighbours. “There was a pervasive silence throughout the com- munity of Japanese Canadians,” Sakamoto says, “and so people of my gener- ation (sanse1) learned morc about internment through external sources, rather than from our parents. There was this deep, sad silence that | felt compelled to explore in order to articulate what lav beneath it.” Sakamoto’s narrator, Asako Saito, is a middle-aged woman who spends her life avoiding, yet longing for, personal contact and close relationships.
