4 - Sunday, September 6, 1998 — North Shore News Needle find a shocker North Van City equips Staff to collect drug ‘rash Robert Gaister News Reporter robert@nsnews.com DISCARDED needles are not a common sight for most North Shore residents. Tracy Davidson was dis- turbed to discover one near her Lower Lonsdale salon last Wednesday morning. “It's just sort of shocking to see them (needles) there when you’re not used to sec- ing them,” said Davidson, owner of Naturally Yours Studio. Her shock became mixed with indignation as she tried tc get someone to come and collect her find. Shc first tried the North Vancouver RCMP detach- ment’s .. . non-emergency number. A nameless voice instructed her to simply toss the nceedic and syringe out. “There needs to be a bet- ter program on the North shore with AIDS and ¢patitis C going around,” a Davidson. “There are the rubby- dubs going through the garbage and there’s a lot of them here.” A call to the fice depart- ment netted a simiiar result, although the representative there suggested she try the health department. The health department gave Davidson the number of the North Vancouver City works yard. A city litter coliector arrived and removed the needle and syringe. Brent Mahood, the city’s utilities superintendent, said syringe and necdie finds in the city are far from a com- mon occurrence. “There was a time when at Waterfront Park we col- lected a bunch at once, but much iess so now,” said Mahood. “That's not to say they’re net our there, but we just don’t see them.” Nevertheless, he said, the city continues to work with a needle program that sces litter collectors and garden- ers working for the city equipped with “sharps con- tainers” and tongs. The contents of these arc collected every two months and disposed of as medical wastc,. “Any needle that gets discovered is a potential hazard,” said Mahood. He = added the city’s employees most likely to come into contact with the discards know what to do. He said it’s difficult to tell where the needles found on city streets come from although he tends to climi- nate Jegitimate users. “Most folks who are on a needle program at home have a needle disposal pro- gram anyway,” said Mahood. Reports of discarded nec- dles and syringes can_ be made to the city operations centre at 987-7155. USED CLOTHING AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS The Developmental!
