But of course, that’s the maestro’s-appeal — that he can hold a crowd witb his comedic genius. Though he would do well to retire many of nis jokes, which are surely older than most of his fans (“At seven I wrote my first symphony, At 13, my parents burned it.”), the audience howled with non-stop laughter. Like any good composition, his show had a theme that recurred throughout. Perhaps in anticipation of his 90th birthday next January, the elegant showman proceeded to narn every piece, from Beethoven symphony to Mozart minuct, into strains of Happy Birthday. Borge was born Borge Rosenbaum in Copenhagen in 1909. His father, Bernhard, was a musician in the Royal Danish Chapel. Borge had his piano debut at 17 in Copenhagen and bnmediately his talent was recegnized. Though classically trained, he soon became known for his ability to make his audiences laugh. His barbs about Hitler were not appreciated by the Nazis who invaded his homeland, however, and in 1940 he fled occupied Denniark for the United States, where he has lived now for more than half his life. His adopted country will honor him with a spe- cial birthday cclebration at Carnegie Hall in 1999. His native Denmark will mark the occasion with a series of events this November. obligation for each is $7,904 and $9,524. The SL has an MSRP of $14,643 and the SCI is $18,203.
