et < LEE OREN nr) vaneeemne, EE it a eras zeae IT WAS a year of highs and lows in travel. By David Wishart Contributing Writer The low point was a February evening in Egypt Air's departure lounge at Kennedy Airport when a fellow traveller pointed out the headline in that day's New York Times which read something along the lines of “Egyptian. terrorist group says it's going to kill tourists." The next low was finding out that half our group had cancelled because of that headline. But I car- ried on, the reasons being that hav- ing survived a night in New York | had to be pretty well invincible, and I had already bought my duty-free Scotch. Duty-free liquor is not what it used to be — in fact the price differ- ence these days, particularly at Vancouver airport, is so minimal it's hardly. worth humping it around. Unless you're going to camel coun- try. For a start. Egypt Air is dry, although they do offer small bottles of red and white wine to passengers as they board at New York, but not at Cairo. Also, a small refreshment of the Famous Grouse was a consolation as the big Boeing sped across the Atlantic towards .., for all 1 knew, a hurtling rocket and a fiery plunge into a used camel fot in a Cairo sub- urb, But no problem — neither on the flight nor in Cairo. Nobody took a shot at us or even pulled a face. We found that other than the angry minority causing the alarm — and don’t we all have them — the average Egyptian was delighted to see us, We went down to the Sinai and up to Alexandria, cruised the Nile, strolled in markets, went to night- clubs and restaurants, and there was never & moment’s cause for concern. Because of the scare there. were few American tourists but the plus side was that there were no lines to see the monuments. It was a very good time to go. However, there have been incidents since in which tourists have been attacked, and it is up to each person to consider how much risk they can handle. Northern ‘Ireland, always a hot potato but never a problem for tourists, had a good year with the best signs yet of real peace. You can't beat it for great people, scenery and golf. fd go before the Americans discover it. And a quick mention of a won- derful hotel, the White House at Herm, in the Channel Islunds, which discourages business meetings because they discourage the social- izing of guests. My final low is to report an increasing number of name tugs on cruise ships. Meeting planners should be made to walk the plank before they spoil the joy of running away to sea. High of the year was the recent word that Canada and the U.S. are likely to sign a new air services agreeraent svon. Itis unlikely to mean the end of the air war between Air Canada and Canadian, Indeed, Air Canada’s top man in Vancouver, Al Thompson, stoked the “res with his statement that Air Canadas wants to — duplicate Canadian’s scheduled services to Honolulu, Los Angeles and San Francisco, But whatever happens it's bound to be good for us trav- ellers. Improved air services will obviously benefit the airport, the cruise ship industry and Vancouver's growing tourist: business, all of which provide many jobs, Finally, when you go to Egypt, take a Tilley hat. You'll need it for protection from the sun. Not only that, it's tough enough to be digest- ed by a camel and still be wearable (an elephant once accomplished this feat) The cushion top had already saved my head from injury when | walked into a tree while scouting for hippos in Kenya, and it saved my scalp again while negoti- ating the low ceiling of a tunnel ina pyramid.
