The concept comes from Formula One racing cars where it has been used for several years by teams such as Ferrari. Porsche's new “hands-on” Tiptronic S system utilizes two rocker switches on the upper spokes of the steering wheel. The driver simply tilts the switch up with the thumb to change up a gear, or'down to change down a gear. Porsche evaluated {1 designs for the steering wheel switches, using drivers of different anatomical pro- portions before choosing a design that would suit all drivers. The Tiptronic gives the driver a choice of choosing between auto- matic or manual operation of a five- speed gearbox. In automatic mode, the Tiptronic S suppresses upshifis during coast- ing, providing improved engine braking during deceleration and a jower gear for resumed accelera- lion, It also upshifts automatically to improve traction and stability when wheel-spin is detected. A new feature for 1995 is the ubility to trigger downshifts in auto mode by braking, ensuring that a fower gear is engaged when pulling out of a corner.
