4~- Sunday, September 25, 1994 — North Shore News More hoaxes from the 20th century ON THE OTHER HAND THIS HAS been a century of hoaxes, and right up there with the best is the Martin Luther King hoax in which there are Jessons for Canada. In the U.S. they have a “Dr.” Martin Luther King Day and many states have Martin Luther King holi- days. But he stole his academic honors. And the major media and the univer- sities tried to conceal the truth. Whole sections of his doctorat thesis were taken verbatim from the * work of a man with the unfortunate name of Jack Boozer, now deceased. Among the honors King received: was the Nobei Peace Prize. But even his Nobel Prize lecture was “plagia- rized extensively” from a Florida minister. _ . There was almost nothing for which he was famous that hadn’t been filched. His “I have a dream" speech came from a 1952 address to the Republican National Convention by Archibald Carey, a black preach- er. His “Letter from Birmingham City Jail,” described as a great American essay, was also based on the work of others, He was, in fact, a life-long stealer of other men’s stuff. The whole affair, complete with denials and excuses, has been pub- lished in a paperback entitled The Martin Luther King Jr. Plagiarism Story, edited and largely written by Theodore Pappas of Chronicles mag- azine. King was a major force on the American scene, of course, and the book makes no attempt to disguise that. But much of his life was a lie. American liberals could not admit the truth. King got his phoney doctorate in religious theory from Baston Co “rE University sind covered iC up furious- ly. So did the New York Times, N Times’ editor was even sworn to secrecy. The Times, Washington Post, Adanta Journal and others all refused for years to run articles on the subject. As Pappas puts it, the story “was deliberately spiked and suppressed.” It was in the U.K. that King was first exposed, not the U.S. In 1989 the Sunday Telegraph's “Mandrake” column ran the story. For anyone who wanted to catch it the King cat was out of the bag. But when the Te/egraph asked American academics whether King was a plagiarist it was given a stream of doubletalk and denials. The one who was organizing the King papers stited, “It's really not true.” The interim president of Boston U said. “The allegation is totally false. Not a single instance of plagia- rism of any sort has been identified.” The verbal somersaults were hilarious. Confronted with the evi- dence, academic apologists talked about “intertextualizing,” “‘synthesiz- ing,” “incorporating,” “voice merg- 66 (Martin Luther) King was a major force on the American scene, of course, and the book makes no attempt to dis- guise that. But much of his life was a lie. 99 ing” and “a pattern of textual appro- priation.”” Anything but plagiarism. King had became a liberal icon, you see. A black Jesus, even. To admit he was aa con artist was not on, King’s doctorate should be with- drawn. It hasn't been. Forced by lesser publications to admit that King’s gold did not glitter, the main- stream media did finally run the story. As kindly as possible. The Telegraph's Frank Johnson put his finger on the problem, “American reporters’ powers of per- ception tend to fail them in questions of race, gender and gays,” he com- mented. (And you can say the same of Canada.) Jacob Neusner, Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at Florida University, goes further. fir his foreword to the book he com- pares the rot of political correctness in American universities to what happened in the U.S.S.R. and Nazi Germany. “itis what people would not say, would not do, declined to publish, refused to investigate, that shows us the true character of thought control today. “With investigating committees proliferating and free speech now subject to violent challenges on our campuses, who can tell me how our universities differ from those of Nazi Germany, except in the detail that there the Right defended the norm and here the Left does?” We in Canada need not be smug. Phillipe Rushton was nearly hounded oulof Western University for pub- lishing data on differences in intelli- gence levels between the races. Professor Martin Yaqzan resigned from New Brunswick University after writing a politically incorrect article on date-rape. Let’s make a deal!
