$i JOY TELLS ALL HOT ENTERTAINMENT scoop is that we will have both Bette Midler and Harry Connick Jr. on stage in Vancouver this summer. While Harry will be on stage at the Coliseum Concert Bowl on Friday, July 22 the date for Bette hasn’t been confirmed as yet. So we now have Harry and Bette coming this sum- mer, Carol Channing is here with Hello Dolly in late July and Liza Minelli is con- firmed for three dates in late September... Also heading our way is one of the most dynamic comediennes around, Ellen Degeneres, the star of the ‘new ABC-TV sitdown These Friends Of Mine and one of stand-up comedy’s reigning super- stars. Ellen makes regular appear- ances on Jay Leno’s and David Letterman’s late-night shows. She’s been described by various critics as a female Jerry Seinfeld, a distaff George Carlin and a spiri- tual daughter of Bob Newhart. Ellen Degeneres will be on stage “at the Orpheum Theatre on Sunday, June 5... Even though the photo of Vancouver Mayor Philip Owen, Bill Pedersen and Chuck Davis ran last week, we ran out of space for the story. This was the party to celebrate Bill Federsen’s 45th anniversary in business, as Pedersen’s Party Rentals, and il truly was a party Robyn MacKay CKTAILS Sunday, May 15,1994 - North Shore News’- 35 CAVI 2 ready to Vancouver this su for the party people... eee Last Wednesday the Coastal Jazz and Blues people hosted their luncheon launch at Derek Campbell's B.C. Ctub for the annual du Maurier International Jazz Festival. The jazz fest plays at various venues around town for 10 days in late June and they'll open with a super double bill. The legendary jazz giant Shirley Horn will be joined by the master of stride, bebop, boogie-woogie and ragtime piano, Marcus Roberts and bis trio. Small disappointment at the luncheon launch was the non-appearance of the usual debonair host Fred Davis of Front Page Challenge fame. Apparently Fred hosts each one of the promo lunches across the country and he’s a bit tuckered out. Filling in admirably for him was the equally dapper BCTV vice president and news anchor, Tony Parsons. Also spotted, Coastal Biues and Jazz Socicty’s Kate Hammett- Vaughan, singer-columnist Denny Clarke, du Maurier PR man Wade Stevenson, Musician Union head Stu Barnett, U.TV’s Mark Driesschen and Ted Friend, BCTV’s Michael Mead and Grouse Mountain’s Naney Chilton... Another really good hard work- ing person is genial West Vancouver councillor, Andy Danyliu, who's positively burst- ing his buttons. The business news is that Andy Danyliu has been appointed as chief executive offi- cer of the Kinsmen Rehabilitation Foundation. Couldn't happen to a better guy! Andy and his wife Meredith were certainly front and centre at the Orpheum Theatre last week as super singer Cleo Laine and her husband, orchestra leader John Dankworth took to the stage as a benefit for the Kinsmen Rehab and the Zajac Foundation. Cleo Laine and John Dankworth took us to wonderland with songs like Send in the Clowns, 1 Didn't Know What Time lt Was, Stars Fell on Alabama, You Are My Lucky Star, When the World Was Young and 3 superb medley by Duke Ellington. Both Clea and John came to the cocktail recep- tion after the show and happily mingled with the crowd, posing for phutos, signing autographs and sipping and supping on the good- ies supplied by the Century Plaza .
