as electricity, natural gas, phones, water and sewer.

People should prepare for an earthquake by establishing
alternate ways of heating homes and cooking. Citizens
should also have the skills to perform first aid. .

Electricity may be out for days. Water and sewer may be
out because of pipe breakage and low water pressure.

Natural gas may be lost because of problems with the
Second Narrows Bridge. The line serving the North Shore
is carried on this bridge. Gas pipeline failures may occur
anywhere on the North Shore.

Telephone service will be lost due to large call volume if
not from line failures. *.

Regulaz transporcation will be disrupted.

Many bridges will be out of service in the Lower
Mainland including the two major harbor crossings.
Perhaps several North Share bridges will be out as well.

Residents may not be abie to get out of their own neigh-
borhoods. Those caught over town may not be able to
return home for some time, perhaps days.

The bottom line is that following a large earthquake in
this area people will be on their own for perhaps 72 hours
or even more.

- Prepare a family plan.

Imagine how frantic you would be if you were caught
over. town and couldn't get home, and hadn't made
arrangements for your children.

It’s important that every family member know the
duck, cover and hold” drill. This is by far the most impor-
tant skill to practise and response to undertake no matter
where you are during an earthquake.

Your children have probably learned this survival tech-

‘nique in school. Make this a part of your family plan and

know where all the safe refuges are in your house.
Develop roles for all family members and practise them.
