In the past, she had been active in her church and a bridge club, as well as being a Red Cross vol- unteer, Now her life revolved around her husband's care. He was apprehensive when left alone, so she managed their shop- ping and other errands on the afternoon that a respite worker life had narrowed with his debilitation. He relied on a wheelchair outside of the apart- ment and his wife found this an exhausting procedure to be done only for necessary appointments. Consequently, their circle of friends diminished and they led an increasingly isolated existence. One day, Mrs. Brown heard a radio public service announcement about’ North Shore Caregivers the programs offered in’ the weekly support group meetings. Mrs. Brown was interested and devided to request another after- noon from the respite service so she could attend, She was pleased to find that the yroup shared similar problems. ft was comfortable to be able to talk freely about mutual concerns.
